Every inference dissipates energy and produces entropy. Qi makes that dissipation the reference frame — a unit of account measured, not declared.

The Problem

Intelligence has no physical reference

  • We price the output, not the process. Tokens and inferences are billed; the thermodynamic work producing them is never measured.
  • The reference frame is a policy variable. Model economics are denominated in a unit whose supply is chosen, so every cost carries a term unrelated to physics.
  • Two identical joules are not comparable. The same computation in two countries settles at two prices for reasons the machine never sees.

Foundation

Information is physical

Erasing one bit has a hard minimum energy cost at temperature T:

This is the reference. Real machines run far above the floor, and that distance is measurable, comparable across hardware, and impossible to fake without doing the work.

Mechanism

Proof of Entropy Minimization

PoEM turns the bound into a running measurement. It reads the full magnitude of every hash as an entropy contribution, and orders events by causal relationship rather than by clock.

  • Work becomes a continuous signal. Every hash carries information, not only those clearing a threshold.
  • No shared clock. Causal invariance keeps one consistent state without global synchronization.
  • Parallel by construction. Compute shards across chains; the entropy record stays additive.

The Reference

One unit, measured not declared

A single instrument cannot both hold value and measure it. Quai Network separates the roles so the reference stays clean.

From joules to inference

Consequence

What changes when the reference changes

  • Cognition gets a cost function. The real price of a model is its dissipation — and it can finally be quoted.
  • Efficiency becomes margin. Moving toward the Landauer bound is revenue, not a sustainability initiative.
  • Stranded energy becomes intelligence. Curtailed generation converts directly into compute at the point of production.

Open Questions

Where this stands

A research programme with working components, not a finished system. What is still contested:

  • Measurement fidelity. Entropy accounting is exact at the protocol layer and approximate at the hardware layer.
  • Volatility. A reference that tracks energy faithfully will move with it.
  • Adoption is coordination. A reference frame is worth what others will measure against. Physics does not solve that.
